An independent check on how we work
CHAS is the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme. It was founded in 1997 and is one of the longest established assessment schemes in the country. It is a member of SSIP, the umbrella body that lets a contractor be assessed once against a common health and safety threshold and recognised by other schemes on the strength of it.
Being accredited means our policies, procedures and records have been examined by someone independent of us and judged to meet a national standard. It is not a logo we bought. It is an assessment we passed, and one we have to keep passing.
What the assessment actually covers
The assessment is not a quick form. It looks at how a business runs a site day to day, and asks for evidence rather than assurances.

What this means for you

You do not have to take our word for how we work. An assessor has been through the paperwork behind it and judged it against a national standard.
Your duties are easier to meet
If you are a business, a landlord or a managing agent, you carry legal duties when you appoint a contractor. Appointing an accredited one is straightforward evidence that you took them seriously.
Fewer surprises on site
Risk assessments, method statements and proper welfare are not paperwork for its own sake. They are why jobs run to time and finish without incident.
Recognised beyond us
CHAS is recognised by public and private sector buyers across the UK, and as an SSIP member scheme it is accepted where SSIP accreditation is asked for.
